The Director’s cut of the original two hour-long pilot episode of The High Chaparral was found stashed in Bill Claxton’s attic in 2011/12, many years after the series was made and shown on TV. Unfortunately it was still in the 16mm film format and was badly deteriorated and damaged. It was transferred to DVD format at great cost as many of The High Chaparral aficionados are happy to watch it despite the corrupted colour; it contains a number of scenes that were shot but not included in the final production. Sound was not impaired!
The missing scenes from ‘Destination Tucson’ (Part 1) take place where John has decided to go with Buck to find Don Sebastian and is leaving Blue behind to take care of the ranch. Blue is not pleased and tells John the ranch might not even exist when the couple return! John is not amused when Blue just walks away.
The missing scenes from ‘The Arrangement’ (Part 2) take place after John has returned to the ranch with his new wife, Victoria, and her brother Manolito.
A very short scene takes place at the dining table with Blue’s empty chair after he leaves the ranch.
Blue doesn’t want Victoria there and tells her to go away when he finds her at Annalee’s grave saying a prayer.
The other scenes take place while those at the ranch are waiting for the Apache attack, and during a lull in the attacks when Manolito asks Blue to help with an injured man. Blue is angry when he finds it is an Apache who has been involved in the attack, Nock-ay-del, and wants to kill him. Manolito persuades him not to and they carry him indoors.
